What is a long haired shepherd? PDF Print E-mail

German Shepherds have 3 hair lengths:

 

Short (Normal)

Medium

Long

 

Pictured below is a long haired German shepherd puppy.  Note his hair stands out like a porcupine.  This can happen in any breeding of German Shepherd.  It is a genetic throw-back and there is no way to determine if a puppy in a litter will be long-haired or not.  This puppy’s litter mates were all short haired.
